Why do I need to attend the Pre-Admission Clinic (PAC)?

The purpose of the PAC is to:

  • Assess your medical fitness for Surgery and Anaesthesia
  • Provide you with information as to what you can expect before and after surgery
  • Answer any questions you may have about your admission
  • Streamline your admission on the day or surgery, provide the best possible preparation and reduce the chance of cancellation on the day

What tests will I have?

  • Blood tests
  • ECG (Electrocardiogram) to check your heart
  • Chest X-ray (possible)
  • Specialist tests and appointments may need to be booked as a result of your assessment

Who will I see at PAC?

You will be interviewed by clerical and nursing staff and assessed by an anaesthetic doctor. Depending on your health and type of surgery, you may also be scheduled for an interview with a specialist nurse and a surgical doctor.

What will I bring?

  • Medicare card
  • Health fund book/card
  • Pension or Health care card
  • Veteran entitlement card
  • BRING YOUR CURRENT MEDICATIONS
  • Recent test results: blood tests, X ray, scans
  • Completed Health Questionnaire (Click Here to Download)

PLEASE NOTE: You must sign a consent form prior to your admission for your operation.

Can I eat before my PAC appointment?

Yes, there is no need to fast. Take your usual medications, too.

What should I wear?

Please wear clothing that is easily removable for examinations and tests

How long will it take?

If your surgery is day-only, allow 2-3 hours for the preadmission assessment. For more major surgery, allow 4-5 hours for the complete assessment. There are many arrangements that need to be made for your admission and it is important that these are attended to at the clinic. A coffee shop is located on the ground floor, to purchase refreshments if required.

Where do I report?

Report to the “Enquiry Desk” in the main entrance of the hospital for your initial admission interview. You will then be directed to the Pre-Admission Clinic, level 4 of the Medical Centre, across the lawn from the main entrance of the hospital.

How do I get to the Hospital and Pre-Admission Clinic?

The hospital is situated in Hospital Road, Concord, and is accessible by public transport or private car.

The hospital is well serviced by public transport. For service and timetable information please contact 13 15 00 or www.sydneybuses.info  or www.cityrail.info

Country Patients

Country patients are welcome to attend the Preadmission Clinic. If you are not able to attend, please ask your Local Doctor to arrange the necessary tests, and send results to the preadmission clinic as soon as possible (click here to download form). You should also complete the Patient Health Questionnaire (click to download), and send this to the Preadmission clinic well before the day of surgery. Your procedure may be delayed or cancelled if we do not receive this information.
